MB Emissions - Emissions Inventory

Certificates and emissions Inventory

This tab provides a complete breakdown of all renewables including on-site generation and consumption, certificates, emission factors and emissions for both market-based and location-based reporting.

The Group and Region tabs at the top will change the organization hierarchy displayed under ‘FY Reporting Year’ in the first column.

Simplified View

The simplified view is available by turning off the ‘Detailed View’ in the upper right.

Below is an explanation of each column in the simplified view:

  • FY Reporting Year: Organizational hierarchy. Drill down from International Market to Country, State, Location, Account and finally monthly data. Or select ‘Group’ at the top to change the hierarchy to your grouping structure.

  • Total Consumption kWh: Total electricity consumption from both grid and on-site renewable sources.

  • Renewables kWh: Sum of on-site renewables, compliance & jurisdiction certificates, green power and voluntary certificates.

  • Remaining Electricity kWh: Grand total after Country Certificates have been applied. Market-based emissions are calculated using this value.

  • Renewables Exported tCO2e: This field calculates the emissions credit received from exporting renewable electricity to the grid. See the explanation below for more details.

  • Market-based Emissions tCO2e: This is the grand total market-based emissions value and it is calculated by subtracting 'Renewables Exported kWh' from the ‘Subtotal - Market-based Emissions tCO2e’ column.

  • Location-based Emissions tCO2e: This is the grand total location-based emissions value is it is calculated by multiplying the ‘Location-based Factor kgCO2e/kWh’ with the ‘Grid kWh’ field.

  • Renewables %: The renewable percentage figure is derived by diving total grid consumption and on-site renewable electricity consumption by all renewables (also including on-site renewables electricity consumption).

Detailed View

Subtotal columns are provided in the detailed view to show you a breakdown of the allocation of voluntary certificates at each group and geographical level. Using this pivot table the user can drilldown all the way to the account and view monthly data.

If you see an error icon (red x) in your emissions inventory then a location has been identified that has a total negative consumption for the 12-month reporting period. Expand the rows to identify the site in question. When this occurs, total consumption is set to zero as the report is unable to handle certificate allocation where the sum of all consumption across all accounts in a location is negative.

Below is an explanation of each column in the detailed view:

Consumption, On-site Renewables and Bundled Certificates

  • FY Reporting Year: Organizational hierarchy. Drill down from International Market to Country, State, Location, Account and finally monthly data. Or select ‘Group’ at the top to change the hierarchy to your grouping structure.

  • Total Consumption kWh: Total electricity consumption from both grid and on-site renewable sources.

  • On-site Renewables kWh: Total renewables generated and consumed on-site. For this category of electricity consumption to appear in the report they must be correctly categorized in Envizi. Reach out the help desk if your renewables are not displaying as expected.

  • Grid kWh: Total electricity purchased from the grid. This figure is used to calculate location-based emissions.

  • Certificates - Compliance & Jurisdiction kWh: This field was formerly called the ‘National Renewable Energy Quota’ and accounts for the amount of renewable electricity on the grid that has resulted from regional or national renewable energy programs.

  • Certificates - Green Power kWh: This field represents bundled renewable electricity purchased by the organization from an electricity retailer. Values are taken from grid electricity accounts that also contain green electricity consumption. Note that this category only tracks ‘bundled’ certificates. If certificates are purchased using the ‘Electricity - Green [kWh]’ data type but in a separate account from grid electricity, they will not be included in the report.

  • Subtotal - Bundled Certificates: Subtotal after compliance and bundled certificates have been applied to grid consumption. The calculation is:

‘Subtotal - Bundled Certificates kWh’

= Grid kWh - Compliance & Jurisdiction kWh - Green Power kWh

Voluntary (unbundled) Certificates

All voluntary certificates in this section are allocated to grid consumption following a prorated methodology.

  • Location Certificates kWh: unbundled certificates purchased separately from electricity but attributed to a single location. Values captured in an account for Location Certificates allocate certificates proportionally across all electricity accounts at the site, after the Compliance & Jurisdiction and Green Power quantities have been removed from consumption.

  • Subtotal - Location: ‘Subtotal - Bundled Certificates kWh’ - ‘Certificates - Location kWh’ = 'Subtotal - Location kWh'. Note that there is special handling in this subtotal column that concern negative values.

  • Level 3 Group Certificates kWh: Certificates captured in a location that is a member of a level 3 group and proportionally allocated to all accounts and locations within the group.

  • Subtotal - Level 3 Group kWh: Subtotal after Level 3 Group Certificates have been applied.

  • Level 2 Group Certificates kWh: Certificates captured in a location that is a member of a level 2 group and proportionally allocated to all accounts and locations within the group.

  • Subtotal - Level 2 Group kWh: Subtotal after Level 2 Group Certificates have been applied.

  • Level 1 Group Certificates kWh: Certificates captured in a location that is a member of a level 1 group and proportionally allocated to all accounts and locations within the group.

  • Subtotal - Level 1 Group kWh: Subtotal after Level 1 Group Certificates have been applied.

  • State Certificates: Certificates captured in a location that is within a state or province.

  • Subtotal - State: Subtotal after State Certificates have been applied.

  • Country Certificates: Certificates captured in a location that is within a state or province.

  • Subtotal - Country: Subtotal after Country Certificates have been applied.

  • Organization Certificates: Certificates captured in a location that is within an international business region of AMER, EMEA or APAC and proportionally allocated to all accounts and locations within the business region.

  • Remaining Electricity kWh: Grand total after Country Certificates have been applied. Market-based emissions are calculated using this value.

  • Certificates Over Allocation kWh: this represents any over allocation of certificates where the amount of certificates exceed a subtotal (electricity kWh that are uncovered by certificates). Note that Envizi does not reallocate these certificates.

Factors and Emissions

  • Custom Factor kgCO2e/kWh: these are custom factors that are collected by the organization. They are assigned to a region for a specific time period and they will supersede residual mix and location-based factors if available when calculating market-based emissions.

  • Residual Mix Factor kgCO2e/kWh: residual mix factors are managed by Envizi and are updated every year. These factors will be used in market-based emissions calculations if a supplier or contract factor doesn't exist.

  • Location-based Factor kgCO2e/kWh: this column contains grid-average emission factors. These are used in market-based emissions calculations only if the previous 2 columns are blank. This factor is also used in location-based emissions reporting.

  • Subtotal - Market-based Emissions tCO2e: This subtotal is the result of Remaining Electricity kWh multiplied by the most precise available market-based factor, beginning with a custom factor, follow by the residual mix factor, and finally if neither of those factors are available then the location-based factor is used.

  • Renewables Exported kWh: Renewable electricity generated on-site and exported to the grid that is not associated with certificates is captured here. For this category of electricity to appear in the report the data type under which your exported electricity is captured must be correctly categorized in Envizi. Reach out the help desk if your exported renewables are not displaying as expected.

  • Renewables Exported tCO2e: This field calculates the emissions credit received from exporting renewable electricity to the grid. The emission factor used for this is the negative grid-average emission factor. Note that if your organization is generating certificates from the renewables generation and export then the environmental attribute of the electricity export is conveyed through the handling of the certificate and should not be recorded here.

    • If certificates are generated and retained/retired then they should be applied to the organization using the voluntary allocation method.

    • If the certificates are sold, then the exported kWh should not be included in this report.

  • MB Emissions Variance tCO2e: This field is the difference between the market-based and location-based emissions. Negative values indicate lower market-based emissions.

  • Renewables %: The renewable percentage figure is derived by dividing total grid consumption and on-site renewable electricity consumption by all renewables (also including on-site renewables electricity consumption).
